CAPTAIN'S BLOG
Michael Shermer (and others, primarily of a vastly-less-intelligent group) love to beat this drum about identity politics, especially lately gender politics.
Honestly I don't know what he's talking about. Maybe that's just me being a disgusting SJW who hates freedom. Or maybe I happen to understand a bit more about gender than some old guy? I feel like writing a paper titled: WOMEN CAN HAVE DICKS Therefore, the penis is not a symbol of maleness. It seems to me though that, as usual, the dissenting complaint about gender identity theory is coming from people who are too fixated on physical organs. "Well I have a dick so I'm a guy" is just not good enough. Sorry :/ Like, ok. I get that this is a fake study they made up, so there's errors and shit really doesn't make sense. But let's break down this conclusion here. "We conclude that penises are not best understood as the male sexual organ, or as a male reproductive organ, but instead as an enacted social construct that is both damaging and problematic for society and future generations." The only problem with this sentence really is the phrase "enacted social construct." The authors and I agree that this doesn't mean /much/, but it does mean /something/. Perhaps this study is more evidence of the enough-monkeys-can-write-Shakespeare joke than any real standard of gender theory, there is some meat on that bone. I think that replacing the word "penises" with "the historical and current socially constructed expectations of masculinity" would best help describe what is being described accidentally by the authors. To translate: "The attitude that expectations of masculinity has brought over time is both damaging and problematic for future generations." And I mean, one week on T blockers will convince you of that. Honestly I'd like to do the rest but I think I've reached the broader point and it's hard to type with my nails. :) Science can be confusing and is imperfect and so is the vetting process and yes gender theory has lots of stupid jackasses including (perhaps even in particular) on the feminist side but gender theory is a real thing and you aren't a boy just because you have a dick and you aren't a girl just because you have a vagina. Like, the rest of biology is SO COMPLEX and confusing and people are like "Aw fuck no, gender? Super straightforward. I can explain it to you in five minutes." "Oh shit, photosynthesis? It'll take me four days but I can tell you everything right up until the photon hits the receptor in the chloroplast and then some fucking magic happens but yeah there's only two genders."
