CAPTAIN'S BLOG
I am an antitheist. So when I heard about this story, I couldn't help but keep an eye out for people who would defend either the actions of the note writer, or the somehow explain that "true" Christians would never do such a thing. I did not have to wait long. I often try my best to keep my thoughts to myself on such matters, but I grew up in the US, and I look up to Sam Harris and Christopher Hitchens, so I often find that I cannot. Here is a comment I made earlier today, in response to this quote, found below the jump: those hung-up types are NOT "Christians", Jesus would slap the crap out of them for messing with his message of love and respect ... period ... I wouldn't be so sure.
Christianity and the Bible are pretty clear about homosexuality (and transgendered people) - we are an abomination in the eyes of the Lord. It's true that some people are able to explain away what the Bible says - often by focusing on Jesus himself (who may never have existed) - but Jesus himself also had some pretty strange ideas - especially a strange hatred for fig trees. He may have been gay though, so we've got that going in our favour, but I'd rather stick with ideas of love and respect anchored in the real world, rather than an ancient book that requires all kinds of strange mental acrobatics to not hate people for what are essentially random reasons - or a floating, generic "love and respect" that is anchored in fear of a god. Unsurprisingly, the Christian community is divided on the true interpretation of Jesus's teachings: "It is technically true that Jesus did not specifically address homosexuality in the Gospel accounts; however, He did speak clearly about sexuality in general. Concerning marriage, Jesus stated, “At the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh[.]’ So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate” (Matthew 19:4–6). Here Jesus clearly referred to Adam and Eve and affirmed God’s intended design for marriage and sexuality. For those who follow Jesus, sexual practices are limited. Rather than take a permissive view of sexual immorality and divorce, Jesus affirmed that people are either to be single and celibate or married and faithful to one spouse of the opposite gender. Jesus considered any other expression of sexuality sinful. This would include same-sex activity." Wouldn't it be better to leave all of this confusion behind, and adopt, I dunno a more... humanist... stance?
